Wow, this inauguration of President Obama is all quite exciting, isn’t it?! It’s my first time in the States to experience this…I’m from Great Britain and we have the Queen and all so we don’t have all the elections that the USA does…it’s quite different. Our teacher is allowing the television on during Obama’s swearing in to be President–I’m looking forward to seeing all the excitement. Jada

When Barack Obama raises his hand and takes the oath of office as the nation’s first African American president he’ll validate that Martin Luther King’s dream was more than an ideal. A wonderful way to honor Martin Luther King Jr. is to use the day to give back to your community…to make a difference by changing what needs changed around you. It could be cleaning up a park, helping out homeless animals, or collecting cans for your local food bank. Do you volunteer anywhere? 

The presidential inauguration is an event that’s about as close to a royal coronation as American government gets. It’s a day filled with ceremony, guards, salutes, parades, speeches, a party that’s actually still called a “ball” and, of course, symbolism: of new beginnings, rites of passage, of change.

The first President, George Washington, inauguration was held in New York City on April 30, 1789.  Barack Obama will be inaugurated as America’s 44^th President on Tuesday, January 20th at noon on the steps of the west front of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
